2017 has been an exciting year for John Mayer and Ed Sheeran fans alike. At the end of 2016, Mayer dropped the first single “Love on the Weekend” on Nov. 17 from his seventh studio album The Search for Everything. In 2015 and 2016, Mayer formed an integral part of the band Dead and Company, but he has decided to meanwhile pursue another solo album: his first since 2013’s Paradise Valley.

Mayer acknowledged his fans in an Instagram post: “Thank you for helping to prove that you can— and should—explore as an artist. That success means freedom, not confinement. That you can take chances, making music that you love without worrying about its commercial reception.”

He plans to release the album in “waves” each month, the first of which was made public on Jan. 19 and included songs “Love on the Weekend,” “Changing,” “Moving On and Getting Over,” and “You’re Gonna Live Forever In Me.” According to Rolling Stone, “The digital-only Wave One was the week’s best-selling release [with] 49,000 total copies, 38,000 . . . from ‘traditional’ sales.” The music is available on iTunes, Apple Music, Spotify, and more. He announced his world tour Jan. 30, to which many shows sold out in minutes.

On Dec. 13, 2016, Ed Sheeran too hinted at the release of a new album. He released two singles “Castle on the Hill” and “Shape of You” on Jan. 6, both of which were received positively by critics and fans.

Sheeran revealed that he collaborated with Mayer on his track “Cool,” yet to be released. “I got John Mayer on a guitar solo that’s uncredited that’s quite cool,” Sheeran announced during an interview with WestWoodOne’s Zach Sang Show on Friday. “I did a really terrible guitar solo on a song and I was like, ‘I bet John Mayer could do this better.’ So I emailed him and he did it a lot better.”

Sheeran is set to release the full album of Divide Mar. 3. Fans should expect his announcement of a tour to come soon.
