On April 6, the Alva de Mars Megan Chapel Art Center opened their “Spring Highlights” exhibition.  The exhibit demonstrates the versatility of the Chapel Art Center’s permanent collection, as well as a few new pieces.

The exhibit features artwork from the sixteenth century and contemporary pieces from New England artists.  Among the earlier pieces being displayed is Cornelia van Wulfschkercke’s illuminated manuscript: “The Chapel Art Center is . . . delighted to exhibit for the first time a large illuminated manuscript sheet attributed to a woman artist, Cornelia van Wulfschkercke, a Carmelite nun working at the Convent of Sion in Bruges in the early 1500s,”  said Maggie Dimock, assistant curator.

In all, the permanent collection boasts over 400 pieces, which includes paintings, works on paper, sculptures, and furniture, ranging in date from the 15th century to the 21st century.  As Dimock illustrates, “The collection serves as a tool for education and instruction for Saint Anselm College students and visitors, and selections are regularly presented to the public in highlight exhibitions.”

The Chapel Arts Center is open Tuesday through Thursday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., with late evening hours on Thursdays until 7 p.m.  On Thursday, April 27 at 4:30 p.m., Fr. Iain MacLellan O.S.B., director of the Chapel Art Center, and Maggie Dimock will offer a guided discussion of a selected group of works in the exhibition.  Free and open to the public, the discussion will be followed by a small reception.  The exhibition will be on display until May 7.
