Comiskey Center for the Arts is currently hosting an exhibition of work by recent graduate Will Suglia. Suglia was a Fine Art major who graduated in 2011, and spent this past summer developing his skills at the New York Studio School in New York City. His exhibition, “Working from Life”, features a dozen or so pieces, all of which were completed during the time he attended the New York Studio School program, where he studied drawing and painting. This intensive seven week summer program gave him the opportunity to work in the studio from morning until night, working with different artists that introduced him to new ways of thinking.
Suglia was awarded the 2012 Mercedes Matter Summer Painting Scholarship at the New York Studio School which allowed him to take part in a two-week drawing marathon and then an intensive 5-week figure painting session. Professor Kimberly Kersey Asbury of the Fine Arts Department nominated Will for the scholarship, having worked with him while he was a student at Saint Anselm College.
Suglia’s pieces on display at Comiskey are presented in a variety of mediums. All of the paintings are done in oil on canvas or oil on paper, his drawings are done in charcoal, and one work is mixed media (charcoal, pastel, acrylic). The works on display at Comiskey have as much to do with the figures in the paintings as they do with the actual process of working.
“I was able to attend the New York Studio School thanks to the help of Professor Asbury and the Saint Anselm Fine Arts department. It was nice to show them what I accomplished by hanging the work in Comiskey,” said Suglia.
Visiting artist Ed Smith, who is speaking at the Chapel Art Center on Thursday November 14, at 4:30p.m., introduced Saint Anselm College to the New York Studio School. Along with his lecture as part of the 2012-2013 Fine Arts Lecture and Performance Series, Ed Smith will also be talking publicly about Suglia’s work with Fine Arts seniors and anyone else interested on Friday, November 16 in the Comiskey gallery.
