I gasp at the sight of him. I never knew a person could look so different in a year. He went from the cute boy next door to a tall handsome man. I’m always late to the witch’s summit because of Aaron Jacobs, my best friend since forever. When a witch discovers her powers, the clan comes to take you and teaches you magic, but the price is that everyone who knew you forgets you existed. Aaron and I had made a promise we would be best friends, forever and always. But that promise was broken years ago by me. As I start to fly towards the summit, a swarm of ravens come at me, and I fall off my broom and start plummeting towards the ground.
I hear a voice, I think. I get one arm under me and lift my head and see a handheld out for me. I put my hand in his and when I stood up, I saw that it was Aaron. And what he says next is the last thing I expected. I see a look of confusion on his face as he asks me “Ember? Is that you?”
Before I could say anything back we both poof into another part of the forest. I look around and to my right is a big bonfire and my clan surrounding the fire. I see the clan leader Eatalia and she looks mad. “So, you have been late all this time for a human man?” she says.
Aaron turns to me “Ember what is going on?”
“He remembers you?!” Eatalia screams. “Ladies, let’s do what Salem does best and burn him at the stake.”
I take his hand, hop on my broom and fly. Once we were high up in the sky, I put a cloaking spell around us. “I can explain … so as you may have figured out, I’m a witch” I say. “But how do you remember me?” I ask.
No one has broken out of the memory wiping spell before, or at least that I’ve heard of. Then again, no witch has left her clan either, Aaron and I are on a roll tonight.
“Some nights I would dream of this amazing girl, and we would have so much fun, either sitting at the shore of the lake talking for hours or making a mess in the kitchen trying to make lemon cookies and then laughing at how bad we were at baking.”
I look at him and see tears start to form. “Turns out this girl is real, and she was my best friend, those dreams were memories.” We both stared at each other awestruck. And before I knew it, he leaned in and kissed me. “I’ve been wanting to do that for years.” he says when we break apart “Same here” I reply, breathless.
Aaron asks, “Are you going to disappear again?” I take his hand, “Nope, I’m going to stay right by your side forever and”
“always” he finishes.
