The team started their Spring semester by traveling to UNC-Charlotte in late January. Nathanial Crane and James Malone, both seniors, attended. Nathanial reached the Semifinal round (3rd place finish). Other schools in Debate included University of Central Florida, University of North Carolina, University of Florida at Gainesville, and Appalachia State University.
This past weekend, the team traveled to the Big Red Tournament at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Nathanial Crane and Anthony Walters (junior) attended for the college. In debate, they competed against Cornell University, Brooklyn College, and Seton Hall University. Nathanial reached the Final round.
The team of 15 students work closely together to develop our skills and all our success is achieved through group effort. We want to recognize Nathanial’s outstanding performance. This makes three tournaments in a row going back to the fall semester that Nathanial has reached the Semifinals or the Final round.
This coming weekend (Feb 24-25th) we will attend the Bowling Green State University (Toledo, Ohio) online tournament. This is one of the biggest tournaments of the year. There will be 45 colleges and universities from 25 states in attendance. We will have 11 students competing at the tournament: James Maloney, Sean Kelleher, Nathanial Crane, Lucas Edwards, Sean Doucet (seniors), Anthony Walters (junior), Brigid Hughes, Bella Uva (sophomores) and Eliana Romero, Keegan Carter, and Matthew Grieco (first-year students). We are grateful for the help of alumni Ailish Husband (’22) and Dave Canarie (’78) with judging at the tournament.
The team is pleased to invite all members of the college community to our annual debate on a topic of civil rights/civil liberties as part of the MLK Jr. Program of Events (put on by the Fr. Jonathan, O.S.B., Center for Intercultural Learning) on Thursday, February 28th at 7 pm in Perini Lecture Hall. The topic this year is whether Civil Disobedience is immoral. It will be a participatory debate, like the Climate Change debate in September. For the debate team, James Maloney, Trie Yale, Kellan Barbee, and Eliana Romero will start off the evening with speeches laying the foundation for the topic. We will look at numerous historical and current examples of civil disobedience engaged in for important causes and issues, and well as philosophical perspectives. After those initial speeches, members of the audience are invited to speak. All are welcome!
