This weekend, the curtain will open on the Abbey Players newest production, Little Shop of Horrors. Based on the 1960 horror-comedy film by the same name, the musical follows a man-eating flower, its hapless caretaker, and a number of his wacky associates (including a sadistic dentist and clueless love interest.) The musical includes such thought-provoking themes as prosperity and the lengths to which people will go to achieve it, and is sure to warm the hearts of audiences.
Casey Roberge ’24, who plays Audrey, reflected on the emotional power of the musical She stated, “[Little Shop of Horrors] is the best culmination of a show that can make you laugh and make you cry, it can make you think about your own actions and about the world around you and how we interact with people every day. It’s a great reflection of things we should think about in our lives.”
Little Shop offers several endearing moments as well as deep philosophical reflections. Izi Small ’26, who plays a beleaguered pedestrian, a shop customer, and Patrick Martin, described his highlights from the show. He noted, “My favorite song is Somewhere That’s Green, which has a descending musical motif that I really love. [And] my favorite moment is probably Mushnik’s “ay-ay-ay!,” I love that part. Ben just sells it so well every time.”
The production even features one eerie coincidence. Jamie Walsh ’24, who plays Ronette, explained, “Something interesting about the show is that, as you know, we had the eclipse this week, and part of the show is that the plant comes during an eclipse. So, if you want to see an eclipse twice, or the product of an eclipse [gone wrong], come to the show!”
