Another Family Weekend for the books, everybody. Families arrived to campus last Saturday, the 23, for an afternoon of tailgating, football, lawn games, and a full itinerary brought to you by Saint Anselm College Student Engagement.
It’s always a pleasure having the folks come for a visit; friends get to meet the family, and the family gets to relive their college glory years for an entire afternoon. It’s cool to get to share a little part of your college life with them, (and participate in some shared shenanigans, of course).
Whether you decided to spend the day in the parking lot behind Sullivan, or by partaking in some organized family fun, Family Weekend offers something for everyone.
Though I didn’t attend any events organized by Student Engagement, I can appreciate the efforts of those who made the whole weekend happen. If you didn’t attend any of the events, like the Family Fun Run or the Multicultural Day Celebration, don’t sweat it too much, but at least recognize those who make the beloved weekend so beloved.
Family Weekend is also a wonderful opportunity for families to get to know their student’s professors. A lot of Saint Anselm Professors join the festivities during the weekend, and are often looking to meet their students’ families. I know for me that sounds like a nightmare, but I’m on year three of my Native Speaker professor questioning why I didn’t bring my parents to meet him (and he says it all in French).
I did in fact, spend all of Saturday afternoon tailgating, which let’s be honest, most of us did. Personally, I think it’s the most fun thing we should be doing on Family Weekend. Lawn games were played, grills were fired up, and I heard at least twenty people play “When It Rains It Pours”. It was fantastic.
Do you know what else was fantastic? The brunch on Sunday. Need I say more? I’ve gone to the brunch every year since I was a freshman, and my parents tend to thoroughly enjoy themselves. They literally drove home Saturday night just to come back on Sunday for the brunch. That good I guess.
A notable brunch favorite of mine (which is going to sound a tad weird), is honestly the butter they have for the rolls. I don’t know what they do to make the garlic butter so good, but please keep doing it. It’s divine.
I think the brunch is a really fun tradition; in general and for my family personally. My mom is a Saint A’s alum, so it’s cool to do things with her, like having brunch in Dav, that she was doing herself when she was a student here. It’s a big reason as to why she and I love Family Weekend so much.
Overall, with the tailgating fun and winning scores of sports games, Family Weekend ‘23 was an astounding success, and I can’t wait for next year.
