Davison Hall has a problem. A music problem. Since the beginning of the academic year, I would go to Dave and enjoy a nice meal with my friends. However, as my friends and I are sitting and enjoying our food, we have grown to notice the absolutely wild selection of music that plays within the dining hall. One that caught my ear in particular was the choice to play a song by rapper J. Cole, but then follow it up with “Talking to the moon” by Bruno Mars, which is known to be one of the if not the saddest songs in Mars’s discography. To add to this odd transition of songs, Mars’s song was then followed by “One Kiss” by Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa, a popular dance club song. After this instance I began to take notice of the music the dining hall plays. To say the least it is just as bizarre as the first instance where I took notice. The issue here is how does the dining hall determine what music to play. Do they pick a random playlist? Do they HAVE a playlist and it’s just on a weird shuffle? Who makes these kinds of decisions? What happened to the calm music that would softly play in the background of Davison Hall. Sure, they’d play the big songs but nothing of the wild combination of songs I have been hearing. If they want to play rap music, play rap music. If they want to play country music, play country music. The bottom line here is that there is no continuity or relaxed stability in the music played within Davison Hall. It’s somewhat off putting when I hear “HUMBLE.” by Kendrick Lamar then all of a sudden hear “She will be loved” by Maroon 5 while I’m eating a sandwich. Yes, everyone has different music tastes but there’s got to be a middle ground and not just whipping my ears in a million different directions.
