The Student Government Association has been as busy as ever in the past few weeks. With the first New England Alliance Conference occurring here on campus, relief efforts for the victims of Hurricane Sandy, a follow to the day of service with a stocking stuffing for the troops, the culmination of an Anselmian code, and the awarding of the Abbot Mathew Memorial scholarship, the coming weeks are bound to be just as busy as the last.
On November 7, Saint Anselm will play host to the first New England Alliance Conference. The New England Alliance is collaboration between the various Student Government Associations in New England. The alliance hopes to establish a bond between the Student Government Associations that will be beneficial for all involved to propel the student governments as individual entities as well as the group as a whole. All of the student Government Associations in the northeast have been invited and turnout is expected to be tremendous. Alumni will be speaking to the Student Government leaders as will be a special guest from Washington D.C. There are seven colleges from New England coming, but we have many colleges apart of the alliance including Harvard University and Colby College.
Hurricane Sandy, the largest Atlantic hurricane on record, devastated many areas along the east coast of the country when it made landfall on October 29th. Matt Mobilia ’11 is currently living in New York and has called upon the college to assist those in need the best that they can. New York as well as other areas are experiencing an extreme lack of supplies. As soon as specific details are available as to what supplies are the most necessary an email will be sent to the student body requesting assistance in the relief effort.
In mid September the 9/11 Day of Service was an overwhelming success with a huge amount of Anselmians volunteering their time to help those in need around our area. Thirty-three Anselmians are now following up on this wonderful day of service by focusing their volunteer efforts on those who keep our country safe. They will be helping Paul Moore ’80 stuff 5,000 stockings to send oversees to the troops.
A student-focused committee is being formed to create an Anselmian Code. This code will serve current Anselmians as well as those in the future. Administration will be brought in on all levels during the process of creating an Anselmian Code that fully embodies the ideals set forth here at Saint Anselm.
Lyndsay Robinson and Shaun O’Halloran, Student Government Association President and Vice President have created the Anselmian Pride Scholarship which is in honor of Abbot Matthew Leavy, OSB. The Scholarship which was one of their major goals when elected in 2012, will present a $300.00 financial award to a student in each class. Abbot Matthew Leavy, OSB has shown all members of the Anselmian community what true Benedictine values are. The scholarship aims to recognize students that embody these characteristics. An abundance of applications were received for this amazing opportunity.
As we near closer to the holidays the Saint Anselm College Student Government Association is working harder than ever to assist our community in being the best it can be. Please feel free to contact [email protected] or any Student Government Association member if you should have any questions or ideas to put forward.
