The Saint Anselm College Debate team starts its 67th season this fall, after finishing in the top five nationally in April of 2014 in the Debate Sweepstakes in Lincoln-Douglas debate at the NFA National Tournament at Eastern Michigan University.

Seniors Katie Muzzy and Kevin Lacourse led the team, with Muzzy reached the Final Four at Nationals, tying for third place out of all individual debaters in the country last year.

This year’s team has five members, including Lacourse and Muzzy, as well as sophomores Rebecca Pelletier, Ashley Leonard and John Arsenault.

Coach David Trumble commented that “With the return of three highly experienced debaters (Katie, Kevin and Becca), plus some new debaters, this could be one of our best teams in years.”

Trumble added that “We are also starting on a new venture this year, competing in Parliamentary Debate. This will be an interesting and exciting year.”

Parliamentary debate covers a wide range of issues dealing with current events from all aspects of life.

The team also competes in policy debate, with this year’s subject being US space policy.

The team’s first tournament is at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania on October 4 and 5.

Over the next month, the team will travel to compete at Suffolk University in Boston and the University of Vermont in Burlington.

Additionally, they will be hosting a home tournament at Saint Anselm College on Saturday November 8.

A full schedule of tournaments will take place in the spring semester, culminating in Nationals at Ohio University in Athens in April 2015.

The team is actively looking for a couple of freshman to join, with prior experience not being necessary.
