A group of Saint Anselm students, in conjunction with The New Hampshire Institute of Politics, has launched the Saint Anselm College Broadcasting Station (SABS).

“I have a passion for the news, for TV, and for pop culture,” Karoline Leavitt, SABS Co-founder and President told the Crier.

Leavitt, a sophomore Communication and Politics double major, and junior Daniel Flatley, SABS Vice President, Co-founder, and Finance major, approached Neil Levesque, executive director of the NHIOP, about utilizing the resources and equipment at the institute to get SABS started.

Levesque serves as the Faculty Advisor for SABS, and Leavitt told the Crier that Katelyn Ellison, communications specialist at NHIOP, has also helped SABS with “approving our logo and little things that we needed to get through with College Communications.”

There are currently 15-20 students involved in SABS. Some of them work as part of the camera crew, and others are journalists and reporters.

They also recently signed on Nicole Ryan, an undeclared sophomore, as the station’s executive producer, who will be in charge of the behind-the-scenes technical compiling of the broadcasts before they are made public.

Leavitt says that once SABS gets established, and is ready to expand their staff, that they will reach out to more of the Saint Anselm student body about getting involved with the broadcasts.

To start, SABS plans to produce one broadcast a week, and they will post them to YouTube. Over time, Leavitt says they hope to have multiple broadcasts published per week.

Broadcasts will be divided up into several different sections. There will first and foremost be a News section, which will cover general news both on and off campus.

In addition Leavitt told the Crier they will have “a Politics section, a Sports section, which will just cover Hawks Athletics, a Campus Buzz section, which will cover everything from community service opportunities at the Meelia Center to Homecoming Weekend, [and other] events on the Hilltop, and we will also have a Pop Culture section which will cover celebrities and Hollywood.”

SABS is also looking into hosting a student debate focused around a specific topic before the end of the first semester.

Leavitt said that they would like to “have a panel of students, three on one side of the subject, three on the other, and just have a friendly little debate.”

The station will also be looking to hold interviews with faculty, students and other members of the college community who have stood out on campus.

SABS posted a preview video on their YouTube channel on Sept. 15, which was anchored by Leavitt.

The station’s pilot broadcast was filmed on Monday, Sept. 26 and was scheduled to be posted later this week.
