The Student Government Association (SGA) at Saint Anselm College has recently been
dedicated to refining and modernizing its Constitution—a foundational document crucial to the
effective operation and governance of the organization.
As an essential blueprint, this Constitution not only outlines the SGA’s structure and procedures but also establishes principles of transparency, consistency, and accountability that the organization upholds in its representation of the student body.
For over a decade, this core document remained largely untouched, containing language and guidelines that no longer reflected current practices or the realities of today’s SGA operations. Many outdated provisions, including references to physical voting ballots, had become irrelevant since the shift to digital voting methods that began during the COVID-19 pandemic.
This extensive revision was spearheaded by Secretary of Internal Procedures Enzo
Scicchitano, alongside SGA members Diego Benites and Salvatore Parent. The three came
together over the summer to analyze and identify the parts of the Constitution in need of major
updates and revisions. They aimed to ensure that the document accurately represented the current practices and goals of the SGA. Their work received further support from the Internal Review (IR) Committee, which is composed of Scicchitano and the elected vice presidents of each class.
This committee convened to discuss and refine each proposed change, engaging in collaborative discussions, voting on specific updates, and proposing further enhancements to ensure the Constitution was both relevant and comprehensible.
The revision process also included valuable input from Dr. Susan Gabert and Jean
Couture, prominent figures within the college’s administration, who provided guidance and
feedback. This multi-tiered review process fostered a collaborative atmosphere, allowing the
SGA members to carefully consider each modification and to address any concerns raised by
administrative stakeholders. Together, the team worked to ensure that the revised Constitution
would support a more efficient and transparent governance structure.
One of the primary goals of these updates was to modernize and standardize the
document’s language, creating a Constitution that would be clear, accessible, and relevant for
current and future SGA members. Through a series of meetings held over a few weeks, the IR
Committee finalized the revisions and prepared to present them to the Student Senate. After an
initial discussion, the Senate will reconvene on Monday, Nov. 4, for an official vote.
Pending a majority vote, the proposed updates are expected to go into effect, marking a
significant milestone in the SGA’s commitment to maintaining a governance framework that
aligns with the evolving needs of Saint Anselm College’s student body.
