When it comes to guns and gun control, where does one begin? Do they start with reviewing data that has been collected? Maybe, but if you look hard enough you can find equally strong numbers from reliable sources for both sides of the argument. I would like to look at this from a simple, common person, point of view where all one needs to see the right answer is their eyes.
In America, we have a long and proud tradition of gun ownership. Guns are a part of why our Republic has been stable, able to grow, and become economically prosperous.
Philosophically, the founding fathers took from great minds like Machiavelli, that if guns are given to the population, the population will remain loyal to the nation because the government has shown that it trusts its people. For this reason, guns must remain a part of our society and that right must never be given up.
Here is where the situation becomes tricky. How “much gun” should people be allowed to have? Again for this, I will simply use common knowledge and show that some pro-gun arguments don’t make any sense. The argument that says guns are a deterrent against tyranny is almost laughable. If the U.S. Military really wanted to take over our lives, they could easily do it. Think about it, an 8 pound,Semi-Automatic AR-15 Assault Rifle, that fires a small, 7.62mm bullet, won’t do anything against a 40-ton M1A2 Abrams Tank that fires a 120mm, 50 pound explosive shell.
An AR-15 will however be used many more times again in mass shootings if it is not taken off the streets. Point is, the U.S. Government will not become a tyranny, and also, like Egyptian soldiers in their revolution, U.S. soldiers will not turn on their population.
The second argument is that if a person really wanted to kill someone or commit a mass killing, they could, regardless of more or less gun control so having more gun control makes no sense.
While this is true, one has to look at the fact that a gun, is a tool made specifically for the purpose of killing.
So it is much easier to commit mass murder with a gun, than making your own bomb. And with all the internet surveillance going on, the would-be killer would be monitored as by police soon as they Googled: “how to make a bomb”. Now on the contrary a person buying an AR-15 at a gun-show without a background check can easily commit another Sandy Hook Massacre.
See my point? Having Assault Rifles on our streets does not make sense. They can’t even be used for hunting animals. Really? Deer hunting with an Assault Rifle? What’s next? Fishing with a bazooka?
Yes, I know the mechanics of the gun are, one trigger pull fires one bullet, like many other guns, but an Assault Rifle is made to be a combat weapon meant to kill large amounts of people. And for self-defense, if someone is in your house, simply the cocking sound of a shotgun will make any intruder think twice about going another step forward.
Lastly, let’s just take a step back and think really hard about this last question. Do American civilians in the year 2013, really, truly, and honestly NEED to have Assault Weapons? If they do, then our country might as well be called Syria.
