In the United States, people have the freedom to purchase firearms and use them recreationally; whether an individual is an avid hunter or simply a collector. However, due to seemingly constant gun violence issues, America may be cracking down on the rules and regulations surrounding the ability to possess a firearm.
Currently, the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution states that citizens of America are permitted to bear arms. Regulations vary by state and the Gun Control Act of 1968 states certain restrictions as to whom can purchase a weapon. However, there are loopholes in the system that allow people to purchase a firearm without a background check.
Today, there are a huge variety of opinions circulating around the issue of gun control in the United States. Many people utilize their rights as citizens of the U.S. and choose to bear arms as stated in the second amendment. However, the many tragedies over the past year have given new insight to the use of guns in the country.
The multiple shootings in Colorado created unease in the national community; and the Newtown Connecticut shooting that occurred in December 2012 appears to have been the last straw for many.
America has suffered tremendously due to the loss of many innocent people due to gun violence. But should the rights of American citizens be revoked as part of the solution?
In the nation’s capital, President Obama “has called for a ban on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines”. He does not intend to rescind all gun privileges but plans to suppress gun exposure to the public. The President recognizes that hunting is an important aspect of the lives of people in the United States and does not wish to abolish any type of American traditions. But, Obama has stated that he wishes to tighten the gun regulations federally and push awareness across the nation.
Citizens of the United States should be able to bear arms; it is their given right by being born in America. The Constitution should not be amended and the people should take advantage of their freedoms. Rules and regulations are necessary in order to keep the peace in America. There should be stricter laws surrounding the purchasing of guns but the privilege should not be eliminated. There are many solutions to suppress the violence caused by the use of guns in the U.S. Solutions may include an age restriction, types of weapons allowed in a residential home, size of the firearm, and so on. Guns should not be eradicated from the country; the people who are handling them incorrectly should face the consequences.
