Owen Bland College Democrats:
Should we set limits on how long Supreme Court justices can serve?
No. That’s a nice clean answer, but you the reader are probably wondering how I arrived at this brilliant conclusion. Well, the Supreme Court, and the Judiciary as a whole, stand unique in the American system as an organ specially designed not to represent the will of the people. Their role is to be independent arbiters of the law, insulated from the court of public opinion. For our system of government to work, the law must be above the people, and by extension so must the law’s interpreters. To function, the Court cannot care about how people view it. Term limits make the Justices of the Court care about how people view them, because they now must think about what will happen when they are no longer Justices. Term limits tell our Justices that they are not the court, just temporary caretakers. There is still a great responsibility, but now the Justice is incentivized to think about what they will be doing after they are no longer on the court. Therefore, term limits make it impossible for the Justices to arbitrate impartially, as the court needs to do.
What are some pros and cons of annexing Canada?
I can’t think of any cons, but there are many pros. For one, twice as many beavers. I mean, so many beavers, and I think the economic benefits of that are obvious. Secondly, there are at LEAST three houses in Canada, and that should be enough to solve the homelessness crisis. Ultimately though, there is one most perfect prize to be won in conquering Canada. Justin Trudeau. He would be ours, and I think that’s EXACTLY what our democratic system needs. I rest my case.
What are the most important qualities of a good citizen?
The ultimate qualities of a good citizen are love of country and commitment to service. What is love of country? Love of country is a recognition that we are undeserving recipients of great gifts, that America has given us rights and opportunities that are the envy of the world and all preceding generations. We receive these privileges by no merit other than being born in this country. A good citizen recognizes this and feels gratitude. Love of country is an understanding that this nation wants the best for its citizens, and in return we should want the best for it. What that leads to is a commitment to service. The privileges we hold dear were not free, they were paid for in blood by generations before us, who died so we could be free. To be a good citizen does not require one to die, but there is an obligation for some selflessness. To recognize that we live in a community, and that to provide for the common good is one of our duties as citizens. These combined a good citizen make.
Mac Connors College Republicans:
Should we set limits on how long Supreme Court justices can serve?
No, we should not set limits on how long Supreme Court justices can serve. Instead, we should shun the idea of serving in government until senility, and, by a cultural change, this will influence justices to retire of their own free will.
What are some pros and cons of annexing Canada?
As with all questions, there are certainly pros and cons. Two pros in annexing Canada would be an increase in citizens and an exposure to broader culture. As the U.S. population would increase, this would create a larger tax base and, therefore, could result in lower taxes for all American citizens. Annexation of Canada would also introduce Americans to a wide array of different cultural practices which have the added bonus of deriving from both the British and French cultures. The two cons I would suggest are the upsetting of the American political balance and a plain violation of sovereignty. If America were to annex Canada, there would be just loads of more liberals voting in our elections (yes, this is typical coming from a Conservative). On a basic level, annexation would also violate Canada’s sovereignty and force an unwarranted rule on the citizens of the nation. Thus, along with most Americans (with the exception of the Yosemite Sam hawk types), I oppose annexation of Canada and believe the costs would vastly outweigh the benefits.
What are the most important qualities of a good citizen?
The most important qualities of a good citizen are the love of country, connection with their local communities, and a desire to always learn more. The American love of country is misguided as it often uses the love of our system of government or our rights to justify its grandeur. The love of country should be based on something more fundamental, such as the love of the country simply because it is your land of birth. Localism has also been depleted in the modern republic and this has caused unprecedented levels of isolation, loneliness, suicide, and a collapse of the American political system as we knew it. Lastly, the desire to learn more is not present in modern America. Most Americans scorn the idea of reading books (the majority of Americans can’t read above the sixth grade level) and we don’t like learning languages, unlike our European counterparts. America is not lost, but must redirect its citizens’ concerns, so that it may once again become a beacon of freedom and hope to all the world.
