DeepSeek makes cheating as easy as pie
Hangzhou’s DeepSeek chatbot has revolutionized how we use artificial intelligence. DeepSeek’s uncanny ability to mirror writers coupled with the ability to upload files makes DeepSeek a step above the rest.
The following is a response from DeepSeek when responding to the prompt “Based on my previous opinion pieces, write me a new article about an idea that relates to all three, in my writing style” My three most recently published Crier works were uploaded with this prompt.

DEI or the Magisterium? Saint Anselm’s False Choice
Saint Anselm College is facing an identity crisis—one disguised as progress. Between the gutting of Conversatio, the moral ambiguity of Campus Ministry’s social media presence, and the administration’s relentless push for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, a troubling pattern emerges: the slow sidelining of Catholic teaching in favor of secular dogma. This isn’t inclusivity. It’s capitulation.
The proposed Conversatio overhaul—replacing Augustine and Scripture with migration and climate activism—isn’t an accident. It’s ideological colonization. DEI frameworks, borrowed from secular institutions, often carry assumptions hostile to Catholic anthropology.
This isn’t theoretical. When Campus Ministry’s Instagram downplays tradition to spotlight Hanukkah and Kwanzaa (while remaining silent on Eucharistic adoration), it signals priorities at odds with evangelization.
Recall how platforms like Instagram fuel the seven deadly sins—envy, pride, lust. Now observe DEI’s tactics. Envy, Students are taught to resent “privilege” rather than give thanks for God’s gifts. Wrath, Dissenters are shamed as “bigots”—a tactic borrowed from Twitter mobs. Sloth, Complex Church teaching is dismissed as “outdated” without study (see: the gutted Conversatio reading list). Social media’s addiction to outrage mirrors DEI’s reliance on division. Both thrive on superficial engagement, not truth.
The solution isn’t retreat, but resistance—rooted in the very tradition DEI seeks to erase. A monk-led Campus Ministry (like Fr. Francis) would prioritize lectio divina over hashtag activism, modeling intellectual and spiritual depth. True Catholic diversity includes Summa-quoting Dominicans, Byzantine-rite chaplains, and pro-life feminists—not just checkbox demographics. Replace climate pamphlets with Augustine’s Confessions, Benedict’s Rule, and Anselm’s Proslogion. Let students wrestle with real wisdom.
Saint Anselm can’t serve two masters. DEI’s secular creed will always demand compromise; the Magisterium demands fidelity. The choice isn’t between “inclusion” and Catholicism—it’s between truth and surrender.
Matthew here. My own mother wouldn’t be able to tell me that’s AI. And to think that you could just as easily apply the same tactics to an assignment in a writing intensive course. I fed this response to three independent AI “checkers” and got an average score of 56% probability of AI use. Now with a few minor modifications (change punctuation, break up a few sentences, add 1-2 sentences), I was able to get that average down to 11% in less than two minutes of work.
I believe that AI has both practical and theoretical uses, and can very well be used in a constructive and creative way. Generative Pre-trained Transformers (GPTs) can function as refined search engines, providing you with direct, often accurate, query responses unlike the traditional list of relevant websites. Dialogue with GPTs can provide a healthy environment to challenge some of your own views, or to learn more about the philosophy behind opposing views. While I truly believe that there are many ethical uses of AI, I believe this to be one of the larger problems created by this recent AI boom, with the explosion of hundreds of chatbots and interfaces, all with their own specialties and tools to bring to the table.
Please note I am not, in any way shape or form, endorsing or promoting cheating or academic dishonesty. I am merely attempting to point out the moral and ethical problems associated with the use of Artificial Intelligence.
