The President of the United States, Donald Trump, needs to be impeached through the House of Representatives. This is not a new claim from the Left, but I think that it needs to happen as soon as possible. I believe that the President believes himself to be the supreme leader of the country, and for all those students who actually listened to 5th grade civics without needing to play flappy bird on their phone, that is not the purpose of the President. It is not the case that he should be removed because I believe him to be a bad person who breaks the law. It simply is because he has broken the law, many times, without any pushback from the other branches of government.
Mainly, let us consider the fact that he has illegally deported a U.S. National, Abrego Garcia, to the nation of El Salvador to the most human rights abusing prison in the world (the Center for Terrorism Confinement, commonly referred to as CECOT). I think that the common argument that the Republican party uses to justify the action is the fact that the individual is a “member of the MS-13 Gang.” Firstly, there was a court decision in 2019 saying that Abrego Garcia was not to be deported to the nation of El Salvador out of a concern that he would face dangers if deported back to his country. Secondly, according to his lawyers, there is no evidence to show that he is a member, or an active member, of MS-13. Finally, he was deported without a proper trial, which immediately infringes upon his 6th amendment right to a proper trial. The Trump administration sent a legal resident without due process to a prison, which is a crime.
The President has also not been following the Supreme Court’s unanimous opinion to “facilitate the return of Abrego Garcia” to the United States so that he may face proper due process. Not listening to the Supreme Court of the United States is not following a court order, which according to the laws of the United States is a high crime, which is all the more reason for impeachment of the President. One could make the argument that it was just an administrative error of the President’s Administration, meaning that they unintentionally deported Garcia. One could also make the argument that Garcia is no longer on U.S. Soil, meaning that he is no longer under the jurisdiction of the United States government, and is under the sole will of the Salvadoran government. However, when it comes to being unable to follow a court decision, that fact trumps all others (for lack of better words). Therefore, with this crime alone, the President must be impeached a 3rd time.
Additionally, let us consider the recent tariffs that have been placed on the world economy by the Trump administration. The constitution of the United States gives Congress the sole authority to impose tariffs on imported goods coming into the United States. Though congress gave the president the ability to levy tariffs for the purposes of National Security, the President of the United States is unable to do so when there is no real need to do so. The President has exceeded the authority granted to him under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), which states that the president is allowed to levy countries in the event that there is a national security threat to the United States. It is my opinion that he has overstepped the bounds given to him by the act, and that he is now illegally imposing tariffs and purposefully crashing the American economy to cause a crisis. The purposeful sabotage of the
economy for personal gain, and the overstepped nature of the tariffs imposed, leads me to recommend that Congress take the necessary steps to put the President in his place.
I leave you with this. President Trump was interviewed a few days ago and was asked if it was his duty to uphold the constitution of the United States. The President’s response: “I don’t know.” According to the oath that the President took on inauguration day, it reads “I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” Where in that oath does it say, “I’m not sure if I’m allowed to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” President Donald Trump is not competent to uphold the constitution, let alone the oath for the Presidency of the United States.
