Throughout the country, college athletic teams have been accepting new athletes, drafting them and welcoming them through the Team IMPACT organization. These schools include Stonehill, Boston College, and Holy Cross, including Saint A’s.
IMPACT matches children with life threatening or chronic illnesses with College teams to give them a strong support group and a simple and safe way to have fun.
The week beginning with April 7th was St. Anselm’s Social Media Awareness week. Anselmians were encouraged to follow Team IMPACT on Twitter and Instagram and “like” them on Facebook.
Here at Saint A’s, there are several IMPACT team members. The Softball team recently drafted a five year old named Alison, the Women’s Soccer team welcomed Josey, the Football team was matched with Nathan, and the Men’s Hockey team shared the bench with player Ben.
Benjamin Roy was drafted onto the Men’s Hockey team in 2011 as the first-ever IMPACT team member to be drafted. Since, he has attended practices and games, learned to skate, and has been given his own locker.
The players have been completely committed to welcoming Ben onto the team, ensuring that he does well in school, inviting him to their annual Super Bowl party, and even going to see his science fair project at school. When the Hawks won their fourth Northeast-10 Championship in a row, Ben went right out onto the ice and held the trophy with the rest of the team. He is a bonafied Anselmian, with his own school ID and email address.
Benjamin and the Hawks are just one example of the great relationships that come from this organization. The Team IMPACT Twitter is filled with athletes welcoming their new teammates and proclaiming how wonderful it is to have the children on their teams.
Ben has proved to be an essential player to the Hawks, and certainly Alison, Josey, and Nathan will be just as vital. Welcome to all of our IMPACT team members and new Hawks!
