The Saint A’s soccer team’s season has begun once again with a squad of rookies and veterans ready to show the NE10 what they have to offer. The hawks were coming off a 3-9-4 record last year with a 2-3-4 record in their conference which certainly had room for improvement so one of the big goals of the season for the team was to improve from that dismal record. The hawks emerged from their nest and opened their season against Molloy September 4 in a 0-0 stalemate. Senior goalkeeper David Hood whose number matches the final score of the game put the team on his shoulders by shutting down any hopes of a Molloy score or victory with 6 saves and his shutout of the season which was also the 8th of his entire career so far. Saint Anselm had 13 shots as a team all together, 5 were on goal. Molloy had 11 with 7 on goal. Sophomore Chance Prouty played all 90 minutes of the game which is very impressive. Prouty led the team with 4 shots and 2 shots on the net, creating multiple scoring opportunities but even those were not to be. And In his first game of his collegiate career, freshman Zachary Mantegari matched Prouty’s team high of 2 shots on goal in his 70 minutes of playing time. Sophomore Brian Jones had the other shot on goal for the team. The whole entire game was a defense driven game with both teams daring each other to make a goal but each side was denied. Hood made an impressive save in the 21st minute of the matchup. The team then traveled to Flushing NY a few days later on September 6 to play the nights of Queens College. The game ended with another stalemate but each team managed to get a goal on the board. Junior Jake McCabe scored the game tying goal in the 79th minute to tie the game at 1 goal a piece on a Saturday night. The hawks are now 4-4-2 all-time against Queens and this was their first matchup since 2018. McCabe’s game tying goal was the first goal of the 2025 season for the hawks, funny how it comes in the 2nd game of the season but that’s soccer for you. The goal was only the 2nd shot on goal and was the first of his career. Sophomore Chance Prouty’s assist on McCabe’s goal was the second assist of his career. Senior David Hood played a good game with 5 saves and allowed only one goal in the 1-1 ties as his season record moved to 0-0-2 on the year. There was 30 minutes of locked down defense on both sides until freshman Zachary Mantegari recorded the first shot on goal of the game but it was denied. Freshman Max Oelkers made his collegiate debut in the 28th minute of the game and recorded his first shot on net as the Queens goalie had to dive to his left in the 38th minute to keep the Knights in front. There also was a lengthy lightning delay during the game as well. The hawks will then travel back home to Manchester and play their home opener at Melucci Field on September 9 when the college of Staten Island in New York will travel to Saint A’s. The hawks have a long season ahead of them and certainly have plenty of time to improve from their back to back ties to open their campaign and get some wins on the board and end the season with a winning record.
