Some confusion arose regarding the new traffic pattern on campus, especially since paint covering a left turn arrow at the intersection by the Abbey Church has worn away. Two stop signs and “Right Turn Only” signs have been installed at this intersection; however, the visible left arrow on the roadway may confuse drivers who are still getting used to the new traffic pattern.

During Sunday night mass at the Abbey Church on Jan. 22, multiple cars were seen parked facing the wrong way, away from Alumni Hall, on the one way road in front of Geisel Library. These drivers presumably took a now illegal left hand turn at the Abbey Church intersection.

Director of Campus Safety and Security, Donald Davidson, acknowledged that the paint covering the left turn arrow on the roadway has worn away.

In regard to concerns with the new traffic pattern on campus, Davidson stated, “One of the things that is critical is pedestrian traffic.” He expressed concern that students may look the wrong way when crossing the road in front of the library because this one way road has reversed directions. He encourages students to be vigilant and look both ways when crossing any road on campus.

The new traffic pattern on campus was created by the college’s new one-way main entrance. The “Dr. Paul J. McNeil ‘46 College Entrance” is located opposite College Road and east of the old main entrance.

Entering through the new brick and granite gateway, drivers will view the new Roger and Francine Jean Student Center Complex before turning right to see what President Steven R. DiSalvo has called “the money shot” of Alumni Hall, the college’s flagship building.

The road in front of Poisson Hall and the Library is now one way, traveling towards Alumni Hall. The old main entrance still functions as a one-way entrance onto campus although the arch sign has been removed. Left-hand turns are no longer permitted at the Abbey Church intersection.
