The Multicultural Center is a great way to meet many new friends and explore all different types of ethnicities around the world. It is located on the first floor of Cushing, across from the Student Government office.
Many clubs that involve other nations are encouraged to meet here because there is diversity. The Multicultural Center encourages students to be open to as many different backgrounds as possible. One club is the Muslim Student Association, which teaches students about the Muslim religion. This is crucial especially after living through September 11, 2001. They host many different events throughout the year including an event that took place early in the year called True Life: My Life in Islam, which was a show about Islam and what it is like to live in the Middle East.
The Multicultural Center offers many different events throughout the year from when we first arrived onto campus until the very end. One popular event among freshmen Humanities students is the New York trip to visit the Metropolitan Museum. This trip is very successful each year. It only costs thirty-five dollars for the day, and you get fifteen dollars back when you return. The day starts very early and ends late, but the students really enjoyed spending the day in the city.
Aubrey Herr, a freshman who went on the trip, states, “I thought the museum was very interesting, and prepared me for the next unit we are working on in Humanities which is the Artist Unit. I enjoyed looking at all the different sculptures and paintings, it was a lot of fun!”
Other events that the Multicultural Center has is the STOP Campaign, Enough is Enough, Self Defense classes, etc. Enough is Enough was a weeklong event, back in November, that had different sub events each night. It was held to raise awareness about violence around the world. One of the sub events included the Laramie Project, a play about a boy named Matthew Shepard who was killed because he was gay. Another was the Clothesline Project, which was designed to make a t-shirt in honor of all women who were victims of domestic violence and abuse.
For the holidays, the Multicultural Center is offering a dinner, on December 5 at 6pm in the North Lounge of Cushing, for all to attend. It is a dinner simply to bring people together, and is a great time. If you are interested in going, R.S.V.P. to Linda Rey at either [email protected] or extension #4282. If you would like to be a part of and become more involved with the Multicultural Center, simply visit Cushing or e-mail Yemi Mahoney about events coming up that you could attend.
