Hawk soccer continues inconsistent play

The Lady Hawks have lost three in a row and four of five most recently. Similarly, the men have gone 1-2-1 in their last three games. The women are 5-9-1 so far this season and the men are 3-9-1 in the 2016 campaign.

On Oct. 7 the Lady Hawks faced off against the No. 4 ranked Stonehill Skyhawks at home and were able to take a convincing 2-0 victory. The game was very quiet in the first half with no scoring on either side. When the second half came around that quickly changed.  In the 54th minute of the game freshman Caly Farina followed up on a header from fellow classmate Kiley Larocque which allowed Farina to score on a breakaway.

Twenty minutes later Farina tacked on an assist as senior Kendra Bonczar scored her third goal of the season making the score 2-0. On the defensive side of things the Hawks held the Skyhawks to just two shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Cassie Quattropani earned her second shutout of the season.

The Hawks next game took place at home as they played host to the Franklin Pierce Ravens on Oct. 12. The game was a defensive battle right up until the end with the Hawks getting four shots on goal and the Ravens getting six. It looked like the game was heading into overtime but in the 89th minute Raven Madison Finlay found the back of the net, ending the contest. Franklin Pierce won in a 1-0 shutout.

After the tense loss to Franklin Pierce the Hawks looked to get back on track against the NE-10 leading American International Yellow Jackets. The Hawks offense struggled and was only able to amass 5 shots on goal throughout the contest. Once again, they could not find score. The Yellow Jackets managed 2 goals in the final 20 minutes of the game and took home the victory to remain on top of the NE-10.

On the flip side the men’s team hasn’t had much success on the season thus far either.

They lost 4-1 on Wednesday Oct. 19th to New Haven, with Emmet O’Callaghan scoring Saint Anselm’s only goal, the first goal of the game, about 18 minutes into the first half.

On Oct. 7, the Hawks took on the nationally ranked Franklin Pierce Ravens at Sodexo Field. The Hawks were unable to get anything going on offense and junior goalkeeper Helio Meirelles Neto gave up two goals. Both sides were scoreless in the second half and the Ravens took the game 2-0 on a pair of first half goals.

Following the tough loss the Hawks returned home to face their archrivals, the Southern New Hampshire University Penmen, on Oct. 11. The Hawks got off to a hot start outshooting the Penmen 9-3 in the first half. However they were unable to find the back of the net on any of those shots. The Penmen were able to put up more shots in the second half, but neither team was able to get on the board throughout the entire game. Two overtime periods later, the game ended in a scoreless draw.

After the grueling tie the Hawks  faced off against the Bentley Falcons on senior day. The Hawks dominated the game throughout and Bentley looked outmatched all afternoon. In the first half sophomore Emmet O’Callaghan found the back of the net to put the Hawks up 1-0. In the second half Jack Heintzelman, Zach Heckt and JD Hayward all added goals giving the Hawks a 4-1 win.

Sophomore Peter Walsh commented on the win and recent team performance saying, “the team is very excited about our recent success, and are looking to build on it as the season progresses. We are implementing a more attacking style of play while at the same time being more aggressive defensively…..The team has a bunch of resilient, unselfish guys who have been developing chemistry all season long. The no-quit attitude has also attributed to the team’s recent turnaround.”

In the Oct. 16 contest against St. Thomas Aquinas College, Saint A’s fell in a 2-1 overtime defeat. The Hawks got out to a flying, fast start and looked to build off their victory against Bentley when Mark Ferguson scored less than five minutes into the game. But the Spartans stormed back to take the contest 2-1 in extra time.  Their next and most recent game was their defeat in New Haven on Oct. 19.

The women fell 3-0 on Oct. 18 against Saint Rose at home and will play Friday Oct. 21 at Merrimack.  The men will play at Adelphi on Saturday Oct. 22, during Family Weekend.
