Hawk baseball swept by SHNU; move to 9-20 on the season

Saint Anselm’s baseball team was swept for the fourth time this year, this time by Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU). The Hawks played SHNU in a three-game series losing the games 12-6, 8-0, 11-3. The Hawks again has issues with runners in scoring position, leaving 18 men stranded on base. That has been the most obstructive issue of the season for the Hawks but through a three-game series it is not as bad as it has been for the Hawks.

In the first game, junior pitcher JJ Dunn went two innings, giving up four earned runs, four hits, and also walked two. The bullpen then had issues with limiting the SHNU offense to just four runs giving up eight runs after Dunn came out. Senior first baseman Dan Bodi and senior shortstop Max Wadington both led the offense for the Hawks getting two hits apiece, and both driving in a run.

Once SHNU got ahead however they never looked back. SHNU’S offense played almost perfect with only one player in the lineup that did not get a hit. Most of the players for SHNU had multiple hits too. Graduate pitcher for the Penmen, Andrew Lalonde, went a full 9 innings, giving up 12 hits, six runs, while striking out two. Lalonde did not need to have his best stuff as the offense carried him to the victory.

The second and third game had a similar flavor to the first as the Hawks pitching got torched for 19 runs in a doubleheader on Sunday. In the first game, the Hawks offense were blanked scoring no runs, and only getting 5 hits. SHNU’s offense was a completely different story exploding for 8 hits, 8 runs, 3 walks, while only striking out 3 times.

Senior pitcher Adam Krol held it down on the mound for the Hawks going eight and two thirds innings, giving up six hits, five runs, two walks, and three walks. Fresh. Griffin St. Onge had a rough outing giving up two hits (one which was a home run), three earned runs and walk.

In the third and final game the Hawks pitching had issues with not giving up runs. The Hawks pitching was led by starter Brian Wojichowski who went 6 innings, giving up 9 hits, 7 runs, 1 walk while also striking out one. The issue for Brian was that most of his runs were unearned.

The SHNU offense again torched Saint Anselm pitching for 11 runs, 16 hits, eight RBI’s, two walks and also leaving 7 on base. Again, similar to the first game the SHNU offense only had one person not get a hit. The Hawks on the other hand combined for three runs, ten hits, two RBI’s, one walk, and nine left on base.

The Hawks struggles with getting runners on base home as they left 18 on. Something that has been an issue for the Hawks throughout the year. The Hawks need to win almost every game for the rest of the reason to make the playoffs. They sit at 9-20 (3-13 in conference play) going 2-8 in their last 10 games. In order for the Hawks to have a shot at making the playoffs, they need to turn things around quick.
