Spain wins first FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia

The FIFA World Cup 2023, hosted in the beautiful and football-loving countries of Australia and New Zealand, has concluded, leaving football fans around the world in awe of the unforgettable moments, jaw-dropping goals, and thrilling matches that defined this tournament. With 32 nations battling for glory, this World Cup delivered unforgettable moments and crowned a new champion August 20th, 2023. 

From the moment the tournament kicked off, it was clear that this edition of the FIFA World Cup was destined for greatness. Australia and New Zealand, as co-hosts, created an incredible atmosphere, welcoming fans from all corners of the world with open arms. 

The vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and world-class stadiums set the stage for a football spectacle like no other. 

The state-of-the-art stadiums that were provided for these memorable games were filled with record high attendance, with a total of nearly two million people attending the 64 matches collectively. For the Round of 16, only eight teams can go to the quarter finals.

Some matches were easily predicted, while some were a little more memorable. Japan edged out Norway 3-1 in another exciting match, highlighting the attacking prowess of both teams. 

France dominated with a final score of 4-0 against Morocco, sending shockwaves through the tournament. The United States lost the defensive game against Sweden. Spain, the Netherlands, Japan, Sweden, Australia, France, England and Colombia advanced to the quarter finals. The first two quarter finals were held August 11th, 2023. 

There were two separate matches – Spain vs. Netherlands and Japan vs. Sweden. Spain fought hard for a 2-1 win against the Netherlands team. Sweden secured a semi-final spot with a 2-1 win over Japan, displaying their resilience. 

On the 12th of August, Australia and England advanced to the semi-finals. The semi-finals were some of the best displays of competition and resilience, as Australia fought for a place in the finals in their home stadium against England. Australia fell short in this game, however, and England advanced to the finals with a 3-1 score. 

Spain and Sweden fought for the last spot in the finals. In the end, the score was 2-1, after a strong defensive game with Spain, advancing to the final round.

 The final game for the world cup was held at the gorgeous Stadium Australia in Sydney. Almost 80,000 fans attended to watch the last match on August 20th, 2023. This game truly showed the defensive strengths of both teams’ goalkeepers – Cata Coll and Mary Earps – fighting hard to defend the championship. 

With Olga Carmona’s goal in the 29th minute, and England struggling offensively and with their failed corner kick caught by the goalkeeper in the final minutes, Spain was victorious with a 1-0 victory.  

This season’s FIFA World Cup was an intense and unforgettable battle. The recognition of this year’s athletes as they fight both on the field and off will not be overlooked, as women all over the world watch a women’s division sport receive global applause.
