Saint Anselm’s women’s basketball team traveled to Syracuse, NY where they faced off against Le Moyne College in the NE10 Championship Quarterfinal. The Saint Anselm Hawks fell to the Le Moyne Dolphins in a tough 77-49 defeat.

The loss closed out the season for the Hawks. Le Moyne will go on to play Stonehill in the semifinal to be held on Thursday March 1. This was the third straight season that the Hawks advanced to the NE10 Tournament.

Saint Anselm wasn’t exactly riding on momentum heading into the game. The Hawks were coming off a home loss to Stonehill, 69-53. The Hawks also lost to Le Moyne earlier in the season with a final score of 66-55.

Aside from rebounding, Le Moyne outplayed the Hawks in almost every aspect of the game. Saint Anselm’s 13 sloppy turnovers cost the team 21 points. Le Moyne on the other hand only had 3 turnovers. Without the converted turnovers the game likely would have been much closer and could have even resulted in a win for the Hawks. Saint Anselm was not able to lock down Le Moyne’s McKayla Roberts who scored 27 points and dished out 7 assists.

The game remained close until the third quarter rolled around and the Hawks were outscored by 12 points. The fourth quarter also saw the Hawks outscored, this time by 9 points. The game resulted in a final score of 77-49. Saint Anselm just could maintain control of the game and were outplayed by Le Moyne.

The Hawks were led by Peyton Steinman guard and Shannon Ryan forward, each with 8 rebounds and 13 points for the game. Senior guards Clairee Putnam and Ali Glennon each had 2 assists for the night with 10 and 6 points respectively.

Saint Anselm finished the 2017-18 season with an overall record of 17-12 and a conference record of 13-8. The team struggled on the road with an away record of 7-8. They averaged 64.3 points per game and a very impressive 41.1 rebounds per game.

As the season comes to a close the Hawks will look to fill the gaps left by the team’s two seniors, Ali Glennon and Clairee Putnam. Both Glennon and Putnam played as guards and were an integral part of the team this season. The women’s basketball team should not have a problem as three juniors Emma Daly, Ashley Briggs, and Michaela Martin will be ready to step into leadership positions for the Hawks.
